What makes this milestone so significant for the Ventura County community?

The Channel Islands Harbor has been an important piece of Ventura County’s coastal identity since its grand opening in 1965. The Harbor represents decades of recreational enjoyment, economic vitality, and environmental stewardship. Over the past six decades, the Harbor has served as the Gateway to the Channel Islands National Park, a hub for boaters, an opportunity for local businesses, and a gathering place for residents, families and visitors. In addition, this anniversary is a celebration of our shared history and the partnerships – between public agencies, private businesses, and the community – that have made the Harbor what it is today.

How has the harbor evolved over the past six decades, and what role does it play today?

The Harbor has undergone significant transformation since its early days as largely undeveloped harbor with 500 slips, one chandlery shop and one yacht club. Originally built to support recreational boating and local industry, it has grown into a multi-use waterfront. Today, Channel Islands Harbor plays an important role in our local economy, supports marine-based businesses, and provides access to educational, environmental, and recreational experiences. It’s home to everything from sport fishing, kayaking and sailing to seasonal festivals and community events. We also have a thriving commercial fishing fleet that operates out of the harbor. Most importantly, it continues to connect people to the water and to each other.

What are some current projects or improvements your department is working on to enhance the Harbor experience for residents and visitors alike?

We are actively engaged in a variety of projects that are focused on improving the Harbor’s infrastructure, accessibility, and aesthetic appeal. This includes improvements to harbor facilities and parks, upgrades to public parking lots, restrooms and walkways, enhanced lighting, and updated signage for better navigation. We’re also working closely with private-sector developers on revitalizing key areas like Fisherman’s Wharf and upgrading our aging marinas.

As we celebrate 60 years, what’s your vision for the future of Channel Islands Harbor—both in terms of environmental sustainability and community engagement?

Looking ahead, our vision is to create a Harbor that is environmentally resilient and deeply connected to the community. We’re committed to sustainable practices that protect our coastal resources, including green infrastructure, renewable energy integration where applicable, and water quality improvements. On the community side, I envision a Harbor that is welcoming to all, vibrant, and a source of pride for the residents of Ventura County. This means expanding low-cost recreational opportunities, supporting local businesses, and continuing to create year-round events that draw residents and visitors. Collaboration will be key – as we invite public feedback and maintain partnerships to shape a future that honors our past while embracing innovation.

As Harbor Director, what do you personally find most rewarding about your role and being part of this historic 60th anniversary?

What I find most rewarding is seeing the positive impact the Harbor has on people’s lives – whether it’s a child experiencing the ocean for the first time, a Harbor business owner thriving, or families creating lasting memories at one of our events. Being part of the Harbor’s 60th anniversary is incredibly meaningful – it’s a rare opportunity to reflect on a legacy of service, stewardship, and community building. I’m honored to lead a dedicated team committed to preserving and improving this great place, and I look forward to working with our partners, boaters, and residents to ensure the Harbor continues to succeed for the next 60 years.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of Channel Islands Harbor.
