VENTURA, Calif. — The Ventura County Board of Supervisors, during their regular meeting on Tuesday, June 9, approved construction of a new playground at Steckel Park, marking a major investment in recreation, accessibility, and family-friendly amenities at one of the County’s most popular parks.
The Board approved the project’s design, plans and specifications, and authorized a contract with Play & Park Structures to build the new playground. The project will replace the park’s existing playground, which is more than 20 years old and no longer meets current accessibility standards. The Board also approved funding for construction contingencies to address any unforeseen site conditions that may be discovered during the project.
“The County is happy to bring a new playground to Steckel Park that is safe, accessible, and welcoming for children of all abilities, while preserving the character and beauty of this beloved community park,” said Chair of the Board of Supervisors Jeff Gorell. “We hope it will be enjoyed by Ventura County families for years to come.”
Construction is expected to move forward following equipment delivery. The first phase of playground equipment is scheduled to arrive by December 2026, with final construction and installation expected to be completed by February 2027.
“Steckel Park is one Ventura County’s oldest and well used parks,” said Colter Chism, County Parks Director. “The play structure is one of the most used amenities, so we are excited to bring this excellent upgrade from Play & Park Structures.”
The new playground will feature separate play areas for younger and older children, multi-generational and all-abilities swings, rock climbing features, multiple slides and a custom oak tree-themed play structure with integrated animal designs. Improvements will also include accessible pathways, poured-in-place safety surfacing, shade structures, a wheelchair-accessible play storefront and a covered ADA-accessible picnic area.
Once completed, the new playground, which is funded by the General Services Agency Parks Department Enterprise Fund, will offer a welcoming and inclusive space where children and families can gather, play and enjoy the outdoors for years to come.
