1. July is one of the busiest months of the year at Channel Islands Harbor. What events and activities can visitors look forward to this summer?
Summer is an exciting time at Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard. The biggest event of the year is Fireworks by the Sea on July 4th, with a full slate of daytime activities that start with our 4th of July Family Parade and expanded Farmer’s Market. In the evening, thousands gather around the harbor to enjoy a spectacular fireworks show over the water.
July 11th kicks off our popular Concerts by the Sea series, which brings free live music from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays at Harbor View Park.
Beyond special events, summer is the perfect time to take advantage of everything the harbor has to offer. Visitors can kayak, paddleboard, jet ski, rent electric boats, take a sportfishing or whale watching trip, enjoy waterfront dining, explore our beaches and parks, or take a walk along the harbor and enjoy the scenery. There is something for everyone, whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation.
2. With more boaters, paddlers, and visitors enjoying the water during the summer months, what are the most important boating safety reminders people should keep in mind?
Safety and education are always our top priority. We encourage everyone to wear a life jacket, especially children and non-motorized vessel users. Before heading out, boaters should check weather and ocean conditions, ensure all required safety equipment is on board and operational, and let family or friends know where you are going and when to expect you back.
It’s also important to stay alert and avoid distractions while operating a vessel. Summer brings heavier traffic on the water, so boaters should maintain safe speeds, follow navigation rules, and be mindful of kayakers, paddleboarders, and swimmers, particularly around Kiddie Beach and other popular recreation areas. Most importantly, never operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Like a DUI, a BUI also carries heavy consequences. A safe day on the water starts with preparation and good decision-making.
The Ventura County Harbor Department is also proud to operate seasonal lifeguard and jr. lifeguard programs during the summer months. Our seasonal lifeguards are proactive in providing protection, education, and emergency response services at Kiddie, Silver Strand, and Hollywood beaches. Their presence helps keep residents and visitors safe while they enjoy the water, but we still encourage everyone to swim near lifeguards, supervise children closely, and remain aware of changing ocean conditions.
3. Summer is peak season for wildlife sightings in and around the harbor. What kinds of marine life might visitors encounter this time of year, and what are the best practices for enjoying wildlife responsibly?
The harbor is home to an incredible variety of wildlife. Visitors frequently see sea lions lounging on docks and shorelines, dolphins offshore, and a wide range of seabirds throughout the harbor. Summer is also a great time for whale watching in the Santa Barbara Channel.
We encourage people to admire wildlife from a respectful distance and never attempt to feed, touch, or harass animals. Human food can be harmful to wildlife, and getting too close can cause unnecessary stress. Also, keeping your dogs on leash and picking up after them is extremely important for the preservation of wildlife. Responsible wildlife viewing helps protect these animals and ensures future generations can enjoy them as well.
4. For someone who hasn’t visited Channel Islands Harbor in a while, what’s new or different that they might be surprised to discover? Or… What are some affordable or free ways residents can enjoy the harbor this summer?
People who haven’t visited recently may be surprised by the ongoing improvements that have taken place throughout the harbor. We’ve invested in upgraded parking lots, our maintenance team has enhanced public spaces, our lessees have improved marina facilities, and the Harbor Department has expanded community programming. The harbor continues to evolve while maintaining the laid-back coastal atmosphere that makes it such a special place.
One of the best things about Channel Islands Harbor is that many activities are free or low-cost. For example, our car shows, concerts, and Farmers Market are free to attend. Visitors can enjoy the beaches, stroll the harbor walkways, watch boats come and go, picnic in one of our waterfront parks, or simply relax and take in the views. It’s a great destination for families looking for an affordable day by the coast.
5. The harbor is preparing for a major transformation with plans to redevelop Fisherman’s Wharf and surrounding areas. Can you provide an update on what’s ahead?
We’re entering a very exciting chapter in the harbor’s history. The approved redevelopment of Fisherman’s Wharf will transform the area into a vibrant waterfront destination featuring new attractions, multiple dining options, retail experiences, and public gathering spaces while preserving public access to the waterfront.
The project is being led by German developer Robert Dahl, who operates Karls Villages in Europe. Karls Villages are known for being family-friendly destinations that blend entertainment, agriculture, and hospitality. Demolition activities are expected to begin in mid-August, with construction to follow. The Karls team anticipates the village will be open in Spring 2028. While redevelopment will take time, the goal is to create a destination that serves residents, attracts visitors, and helps ensure the long-term vitality of Channel Islands Harbor for generations to come.
